Warts and Papillomas

Warts (sometimes called verrucas, plantar warts or papillomas) are viral infections of the skin which are common in people of all walks of life. They are contagious and often painful, and are sometimes mistaken for corns and calluses. The wart virus enters the skin via small breaks in the surface – sometimes through trauma, but often through skin that is excessively moist. Once in the skin, the virus changes the way skin grows, resulting in a wart. This can rapidly become large, especially in those with low immunity, children or adolescents. In most cases warts develop on the soles of the feet which results in a pain often described as ‘walking on a pebble’.

Treatment includes using agents such as liquid nitrogen, acid treatments, or over the counter chemical products from your pharmacist. (The action of these agents can be greatly improved by your Podiatrist regularly reducing the the thickness of the wart). In addition, your Podiatrist will discuss ways that you can improve your own immune response against the wart – the ideal way for your body to eradicate them is to develop immunity (like any virus).

Difficult or non responsive warts may require further treatment such as dry needling or curettage (removal of the entire wart under local anaesthetic). Your Podiatrist can suggest the best course of treatment for you based on the wart location and size, and your lifestyle.
